It’s been a little bit since I’ve updated you all here. So, please allow me the privilege of doing so! Monte & I went back to our roots for the Christmas holidays, and had a great time visiting family and friends. It was busy as usual, but really great. There were a few folks who couldn’t be there, and we missed them so much! Holidays aren’t quite the same when people who are supposed to be there aren’t. Before Monte flew in, I went around with my mother-in-law-to-be and looked at the ceremony/reception site and got a better idea of how everything will fit together. Looking at everything shifted me into high gear this week to try to get some things on the books.
Before I begin, let me just say that for any of you out there who are currently also planning a wedding (I know there’s at least three of you…), don’t make the same assumption I made: Simple and Low Key = Inexpensive. Ha! Can you believe it? Even the simplest of weddings can lead to an expansion of budget. GAH!!
So, speaking of budget, I made the decision this week that I was not going to go to the Lubbock Bridal Fair. I was pretty torn about it, but I couldn’t justify a plane ticket to Lubbock, and I couldn’t justify being absolutely exhausted after a quick 10 hour jaunt in a car, and then doing it again 24 hours later. All the vendors were listed online, so I was able to just start making phone calls. Besides, there’s going to be a bridal fair here this weekend, and another bride-to-be and I will attend, just for fun and the experience. I think that’ll do it!
Now to what got checked off the list. This week, I actually got a lot of planning done. First things first, the DJ was reserved. He is quite experienced in the Texas Country music genre, which is a must, AND he does karaoke, another absolute must. Could it be any better? Only if he gave me a discount for a super simple ceremony… and that’s what happened! Ceremony with music and sound? Check. Reception with an Emcee and the perfect music and entertainment? Check. Moving right along!
Secondly, I now am promised a dance floor! I had been worried about this, because the barn floor is all dirt. I was worried about a level surface underneath, about dirt messing it up, and about having one big enough that the barn didn’t just swallow, like Jonah. I am in luck!! All of those worries are like the seeds of a dandelion. Whew!!
At Christmas time, I was reminded that bales of hay are great for a few minutes here and there, but they’re no lay-z-boy recliner, that’s for sure! So I decided that I would have tables and chairs for most to sit at, and whoever prefers the hay, well, there’ll be plenty of it! It gets even better… they are going to deliver the dance floor, tables & chairs, set them up, come back the next moring, tear them down and take it all away! No manual labor for us! YAY!
Thirdly, Monte’s idea of pie at the wedding (rather than cake) has now come to fruition!! We will all have our own, individual PIE, thanks to an amazing recommendation from my sister-in-law-to-be, Cammy. This place in Amarillo , called Biti Pies, specializes in these little bity pies! How fabulous and fun!
Last but certainly not least, the end is near for lining out the menu. I think I’ve got the caterer lined out, but I was surprised to know how many tables he was going to need to lay it all out! Not to worry though, I can always add more tables to the order if I need to. I asked for a few items like baked beans and sweet cornbread. Much to my surprise, this particular caterer hadn’t done those before. So, I told him he faced a challenge, if he wanted the dough! I think he’ll be working on this for a bit, and luckily there’s plenty of time for him to create the perfect recipe!
We are moving ahead at a fairly good pace, and we’re right on schedule with our countdown calendar!
Wishing you the best in the New Year! Cheers!

Erin, you sound so excited and seem to be enjoying planning your wedding and that is just how it should be! Enjoy it! Congrats again!
